We have published our study on Iron Age Saka individuals from Boz-Barmak, Kyrgystan, in Scientific Reports. Led by Aigerim and her first first-author publication! Congrats!

A very good time at SMBE in Copenhagen. Presented on Introgression, meeting many old friends and great new people, and many discussions about evolution.

A great time at the first International Conference on Palaeogenomics, with a talk by Michelle about the mummies and a poster presentation by Barbara on great ape viruses.

Today we had a mini retreat. 1 minute per project – we should be concise and clear about our work. Appreciations for working together, and thinking what we like about the great stuff we are doing. Also, lots of Sushi and desserts…

This week, Irene Gallego Romero was visiting the Department as part of the HEAS seminar series. We had a great time and fun discussions!

We published now in Molecular Biology & Evolution our paper presenting a neat tool to calculate statistics for adaptive introgression.

This is work led by Xin!

We published in Scientific Data our curated great ape genome diversity paper. We collected high coverage whole genomes, report some inconsistencies in previously published metadata, and present curated sets of genotypes as well as mapped sequences. A lot of effort, which will hopefully be useful for others as well.

A new paper with contributions from the lab published in PNAS! Poor DNA preservation, but still, we obtained a mitochondrial genome.

Four years ago, the admixlab was established.

In summer, I got tenured. So, we went to celebrate, that is Sojung, the PhD students (Aigerim, Josef, Michelle and Ina), and me.

This time, it was a special group activity, we went to a concert at Musikverein in Vienna, which was really great!

A nice conference in Barcelona, a great opportunity to catch up with friends and collaborators and getting to know a lot of new things about evolutionary biology.

We were at the SMBE conference 2025 in Beijing. A fantastic conference, meeting many colleagues, learning a lot of things.

I presented work on great ape data and introgression, and Sojung presented bonobo substructure work.

We had Felix Key from the MPI for Infection Biology Berlin visiting this week. He gave a talk on “Decoding the Evolutionary Past of Pathogens” as part of the HEAS genomics seminars, and we had some nice discussions around pathogens etc.

On 10th of June, I was visiting the MPI in Leipzig to give a talk at the Department of Primate Behavior and Evolution on Great Ape genomic diversity and pathogens, spending a great day with Jenny, Genevieve and many others, discussing science around primates and more (and bit of the old days).

In April, I talked about the current state of how to detect admixture at the Human Evolution Conference in Hinxton (UK). Thanks to the organisers, particularly Carina Schlebusch!

Then I dropped by at UCL for a lab visit with Aida Andres, presenting the recent state of work on great ape genomes from modern and historical perspectives, and meeting many people at UCL. It was a really great day, and we forgot to take photos with all being nice.

Other team members are also travelling, Konstantina was in Tübingen (Germany) for collaboration, Michelle is at RIKEN (Japan), Xin was at ICLR in Singapore, and Aigerim is set to go to the IGPH2025 in Almaty (Kazakhstan)!

There is a new book, the The Oxford Handbook of Approaches to Language Evolution, for which I provided a chapter with Cedric Boeckx & Juan Moriano – check it out!

It has been a while since the last updates, but the lab has been busy.
In January, we had a group dinner to celebrate the paper of Xin and Josef.

Also in January, we had Ilan Gronau from Reichman University visiting to give a HEAS genomics seminar, and to discuss ancient DNA, G-PhoCS and other things (unfortunately we forgot taking a photo).

The FWF released a nice article about the RNA virus project, and there was interest in the media as well, including Ö1 and Die Presse!

In March, Barbara started an internship on great ape museum viruses – exciting things to come!

Also in March, Mehmet Somel from the Middle East Technical University was paying a visit, also for the HEAS genomics seminar, meet people and discuss ongoing work. This time, with photo:

And finally, on 2nd of April I was invited by Elmira Mohandesan at the VetMed Vienna to give a Wilhelminenberg Seminar, which was very nice!

Last paper of 2024 paper from the lab by Josef & Xin, in Infection, Genetics and Evolution: Revisiting adaptive introgression at the HLA genes in Lithuanian genomes with machine learning

We screened more than 200 great ape specimens from museums for DNA viruses, and found even high-coverage virus genomes there. Tremendous work led by Michelle, and together with many others!

In Barcelona today (26th Sep 2024) for the PhD defense of Harvi Pawar – a great presentation on gorilla genomics, and a well-deserved highest grade. Congratulations, Harvi!
