PanAf genomics on chromosome 21 paper

A new paper that M.K. was very happy to contribute to is finally out!
As part of the work of a large consortium around the MPI-EVA in Leipzig, DNA data has been gathered from the feces of hundreds of chimpanzee individuals living in Africa. In Fontsere et al. 2022, genomic data from the wild provides a fine-grained picture of the history of our closest living relatives. Differences between populations emerged during the past tens of thousands of years, with opportunities for gene flow and migration. Also, local genetic variation can now be used to track the geographic origin of captive and confiscated chimpanzees, which is important for conservation of threatened species.
